On World Animal Day, the President of the Hellenic Republic, Katerina Sakellaropoulou, met with representatives of the NGO,
Animal Welfare Karpathos
The lifetime honorary membership is awarded to individuals who have either directly helped the numerous strays of Karpathos island, or have significantly contributed to the welfare of animals on a national or international level. Among other honorary members of Animal Welfare Karpathos, is the famed primatologist and UN Messenger of Peace Dr. Jane Goodall, who has expressed her support of the organization.
Throughout her career, Ms. Sakellaropoulou has demonstrated an exemplary devotion to the protection of the environment and animals. It was with great honor that the representatives were welcomed in a private meeting, during which they had the opportunity to discuss the animal welfare status on Karpathos island and Greece overall.
Ms. Sophia Hiras and Dr. Anna Katogiritis both stressed the importance of the cooperation between local governments and national governments with non profit organizations who aim to improve animal welfare.
As it is now scientifically acknowledged that animals are sentient beings, they deserve the collective governmental and private effort, energy and devotion for the improvement of their welfare and protection of their individual rights. Animal Welfare Karpathos is committed to continue working towards those goals by collaborating with respectable and accredited international and local organizations.
